The Handshake

Handshake 1.jpeg

The handshake is common in the U.S., especially in business. The first two photos demonstrate how to properly engage a handshake. The third photo shows a weak handshake. Don't give a limp, weak handshake!

A proper handshake:

  • Comes with eye contact

  • Is firm

  • Lasts about 3 seconds

  • Doesn't continue through the entire introduction

You shake when...

  • Someone offers his/her hand to you

  • First meeting someone

  • Greeting guests

  • Greeting your host/hostess

  • Renewing an acquaintance

  • Saying good-bye

Tip: When you are at a dinner, keep your drink in your left hand to avoid giving someone a wet, cold handshake.
